Ian McFarlane

I am a multifaceted theatre maker whose unique practice of landscape poetics, junkyard theatrics and performative alchemy explores the unexpected correspondence between the performing body and the performing-of the world. Using the disciplines of puppetry, eco-scenography and sensory ethnography as foundations for creative inquiry, I create works for the theatre, outdoor spectacles and community-led projects.

I received a BFA in Multidisciplinary from the University of Lethbridge in 2010. Since then I have lived in Treaty 7 territory (Calgary, Alberta) where my practice has encompassed performance, scenic design, devised theatre, painting and puppetry. I am a Co-Founder of Mudfoot Theatre, an independent, interdisciplinary performance ensemble in Calgary, Alberta, as well as a Puppeteer with Bread and Puppet Theater in Glover, Vermont. I am currently pursuing my MFA in Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University.

Paralleling my creative practice, I navigate my life with a bicycle, a paddle and a pair of hiking boots. Wild space, landscape and weather continue to be my greatest teachers.
